The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has conducted a major operation in Ibadan, Oyo State, destroying counterfeit drugs and substandard medical devices valued at N43 billion. The destruction took place at the Moniya dump site in Akinyele Local Government area on Thursday, with security agencies and representatives from the Oyo State Government present.

NAFDAC’s Director-General, Professor Christiana Mojisola Adeyeye, represented by Pharm. Shabba Mohammed, Director of Investigation and Enforcement, revealed that the products were voluntarily surrendered by companies, NGOs, and trade unions.

Professor Adeyeye highlighted the extensive efforts leading to the seizure of various pharmaceutical products, including aphrodisiacs, sex enhancement drugs, over-the-counter medications, and prescription-only drugs. Notably, over thirty different products were confiscated, including banned substances like codeine and narcotics, totaling over N48 million.

Recent NAFDAC raids have resulted in the confiscation of products worth over N700 million, targeting counterfeit pharmaceuticals and contraband items such as unregistered soaps, tomato paste, and counterfeit beverages.

Professor Adeyeye stressed the importance of public involvement in the fight against counterfeit drugs and urged citizens to report illegal practices to NAFDAC offices for prompt action.
