The Motorcycle Operators Union of Nigeria (MOUN) has officially inaugurated its first Executive members in Cross River State. The ceremony took place at the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) Secretariat in Calabar over the weekend, with 15 individuals sworn in to lead the union in the state.
During the inauguration, MOUN’s National President, Com. Julius Oghenevwegba Bobi, urged the newly elected executive, led by Comrade Echip Enang Enang, to work diligently to improve the union’s image and promote professionalism among members. He emphasized the importance of rebranding the motorcycle trade, countering the perception of riders as unorganized and irresponsible.
Bobi recalled that the establishment of the union began in 2016, with approval from the then Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige. He encouraged members to take pride in their roles as ambassadors of the union and to strive for recognition and respect from the government and the public.
He acknowledged the challenges faced by motorcycle operators, including bans in some states due to security concerns, but expressed confidence that the union would effectively engage with all levels of government to address these issues.
In her remarks, Mrs. Henrietta Offiong-Tabo, the Controller of Labour from the Federal Ministry of Labour and Empowerment, called for support for the new executives and offered to provide industrial training on labor matters.
The State Commissioner for Transportation and Marine Services, Hon. Ekpeyong Cobham, represented by Permanent Secretary Donatus Ejemot Esu, highlighted the administration’s initiatives to improve safety and infrastructure for motorcycle operators. He assured the union that the government aims to support their operations and maintain open communication for addressing any concerns.
