The Motorcycle Operators Union of Nigeria (MOUN), Lagos State branch, has strongly condemned the actions of an irate mob that resulted in the death of a senior police officer during a violent incident on October 19, 2024.

Incident Overview

The tragic event took place at WEMPCO Junction, Mobil Road, Agege, following a collision between a commercial motorcyclist and a goods-laden truck. Reports indicate that the motorcyclist died as a result of the crash, prompting a group of fellow motorcyclists to gather at the scene with intentions of attacking the truck driver and setting the vehicle ablaze.

In response to the escalating situation, a police team was dispatched to restore order. Unfortunately, the officers were met with aggression, leading to the fatal assault of an Assistant Superintendent of Police who was leading the response team.

MOUN’s Response

In a statement released by MOUN’s Publicity Secretary, Raji Rasak, the union expressed deep regret over the incident and condemned the resort to mob violence. Rasak emphasized, “MOUN is totally opposed to resorting to self-help, mob action, and jungle justice in seeking to redress real or perceived wrongs in road traffic accidents.”

The union urged members of the public to cooperate with law enforcement in order to ensure a thorough investigation and appropriate justice for the deceased officer. Rasak also noted that MOUN is collaborating with the Lagos State Government to promote self-regulation among commercial motorcyclists through unionization. This initiative aims to register members, enhance regulation, and prevent future incidents of mob action.

Condolences and Next Steps

The Motorcycle Operators Union extended its condolences to the family of the deceased police officer and the Nigeria Police Force. MOUN indicated plans to pay a condolence visit to the Lagos State Police Commissioner as part of their commitment to fostering peace and cooperation between the police and the motorcycling community.

The police are currently investigating the incident and making efforts to identify and apprehend those responsible for the attack, highlighting the ongoing challenges of ensuring public safety and accountability on the roads.
