Honourable Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, the Minister of State for Labour and Employment, has called on state governors to prioritize the health sector alongside road infrastructure development. During her 17th annual free medical outreach held in Isuochi, Abia State, she emphasized that while road construction is important, neglecting healthcare could result in a “sick population,” which she deemed more devastating than poverty.
Onyejeocha stated, “Governors should diversify their focus to include the health sector, agriculture, and security. A crumbling health sector means we are fostering a sick population.” Her remarks highlight the critical need for a balanced approach to state governance that addresses health needs alongside infrastructure improvements.
The minister, who previously served as the Deputy Whip of the House of Representatives, expressed her passion for the health and well-being of underprivileged communities. She shared that her medical outreach initiative is funded from her personal savings, a commitment she has maintained for 17 years as part of her “covenant with God.”
Dr. Humble Chimaobi, leading the medical team from the Federal Medical Centre, Owerri, reported that over 120 patients had been treated during the outreach, including 35 surgical cases. The initiative aims to provide medical assistance to 600 patients and 400 surgical cases, addressing prevalent health issues such as hernias, malaria, high blood pressure, and diabetes.
Beneficiaries of the outreach expressed their heartfelt gratitude to Onyejeocha, describing her as “God-sent” and sharing how her efforts have alleviated financial burdens associated with healthcare costs for their families.
The minister reiterated her commitment to ensuring free healthcare for those in need, vowing to continue the initiative regardless of the financial implications. Her dedication reflects a strong advocacy for improved health services in underserved communities.
