The Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Engr Joseph Utsev, affirmed that the Dadin-Kowa and Goronyo dams in Gombe and Sokoto States are in good condition, dismissing circulating rumors.
Speaking at a press conference for 2024 World Rivers Day, themed ‘Protect our Rivers from Pollution,’ Utsev emphasized the importance of safeguarding rivers for their ecological, economic, and social roles. He explained the critical connection between rivers and dams, noting that rivers supply water to dams, which are key for water management, irrigation, flood control, and hydro-power generation.
He also stressed the need to protect river courses to maintain dam integrity, citing threats like anthropogenic activities, riverine issues, and climate factors. The Minister reiterated the government’s commitment to protecting lives and infrastructure, promising continued efforts in dam surveillance and accurate public information.
Utsev warned against spreading misinformation regarding dam safety, referencing recent false reports on Dadin-Kowa and Goronyo dams, and highlighted the risks of undermining public trust and confidence in dam infrastructure.
