Super Eagles legend John Mikel Obi has backed striker Victor Osimhen after his recent social media outburst directed at former Nigeria head coach Finidi George.

Osimhen had criticized Finidi for allegedly questioning his commitment to the national team, leading to a heated exchange online. Mikel Obi, speaking on the Obionepodcast, expressed understanding of Osimhen’s frustration, especially in light of the Super Eagles’ disappointing performances against South Africa and Benin Republic.

Mikel said, “Every time I speak to him, he’s very humble and respectful. Respect should be mutual. I respect you, and you respect me.”

He added that Osimhen’s frustration stemmed from feeling unsupported by Finidi. “Victor felt that after a recorded conversation with the manager, he was left exposed. His outburst was a reaction to feeling thrown under the bus. While the manner of his response might not have been ideal, he had every right to defend himself.”

Mikel concluded, “I hold no grudge against Victor for that. Recognizing your worth is not arrogance.”
