Tragedy struck in Nibo, Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State on Sunday when masked gunmen launched a deadly assault during the Onwa Asaa festival, a traditional community celebration. The attackers, reportedly driving a black Lexus SUV, stormed an eatery in the area and opened fire indiscriminately, leaving several people dead. At the time of the report, at least 10 lives had been lost in the brutal attack.
Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic, with festival-goers scrambling for safety amidst the gunfire. “It felt like a war zone. The gunmen just stormed the place and started shooting everywhere. People were running for their lives, screaming and crying. It was absolute chaos,” one witness recounted.
The motive for the attack remains unclear, but concerned residents are calling on the authorities to take swift action to restore peace and ensure security in the community. “We urge the government to act immediately. We cannot continue to live in fear. We need peace and security in our community. What was supposed to be a joyful celebration has been marred by violence and bloodshed,” a local resident lamented.
When Vanguard visited the scene, a strong security presence, including police officers and other agencies, had been deployed to maintain order. The police command confirmed that investigations into the incident are underway.
