Manchester United secured a resounding 7-0 victory over Barnsley in the League Cup third round on Tuesday, with Antony scoring his first goal of the season and Marcus Rashford netting twice to continue his revival.
United, struggling in the Premier League with two defeats in their first four games, dominated their third-tier opponents at Old Trafford. Rashford, Antony, and Alejandro Garnacho scored before half-time, effectively sealing the match. Rashford and Garnacho added goals after the break, with Christian Eriksen scoring twice to complete United’s biggest win since Erik ten Hag took over as manager in 2022.
“It is the first time this team is playing together. Once we found our patterns we scored some great goals,” Ten Hag said. He praised the team’s speed and ruthlessness, emphasizing the importance of the right attitude and concentration.
Despite pledging to take the League Cup “very seriously,” Ten Hag made eight changes to his lineup, including a first start for Manuel Ugarte after his arrival from Paris Saint-Germain. United’s strong performance marked a positive step following their Premier League win over Southampton.
Ten Hag had previously compared Rashford’s goal-scoring form to a bottle of ketchup, suggesting that a burst of goals would follow his first of the season.
