Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, has been hit hard by a nine-day flood, leading to an estimated loss of ₦27 billion. The flood submerged over 70% of the city, disrupting daily trade activities that generate more than ₦3 billion.
Alhaji Ahmed Ashemi, president of the Borno Chamber of Commerce, Industries, Mines, and Agriculture (BOCCIMA), emphasized Maiduguri’s strategic importance as a major trading hub, second only to Lagos. He noted that the Monday market alone generates ₦1.5 billion daily, exacerbating the economic impact of the flooding.
In response to the disaster, donations and pledges have accumulated, totaling ₦21 billion as of Wednesday. Contributions have come from various sources, including ₦3 billion from the North East Development Commission and ₦2 billion from business magnate Aliko Dangote.
Governor Babagana Zulum’s Senior Special Assistant on Social Media, Abdulrahman Bundi, confirmed that while some donations have been received, many pledges remain unfulfilled.
Notable contributions also include ₦250 million from Bauchi State and ₦200 million from Kebbi State, along with donations from prominent figures like Atiku Abubakar (₦100 million) and Peter Obi (₦50 million).
The flood continues to pose challenges to recovery efforts in Borno as the state awaits additional support.
