Luis Suarez has announced his retirement from international football with the Uruguay national team. The Uruguayan striker, who has competed in four World Cups and was named the best player of the 2011 Copa America, will bid farewell to international play after Uruguay’s World Cup qualifying match against Paraguay on Friday.

Suarez, formerly of Barcelona and Liverpool and currently with Inter Miami alongside Lionel Messi, expressed his decision to retire with a sense of fulfillment and clarity. He stated, “I leave with the peace of mind that I gave everything for the national team until Friday. I have no regrets.”

At 37 years old, Suarez acknowledged the challenges of continuing at the international level and emphasized his desire to retire on his own terms rather than due to injury or being omitted from the squad. He shared, “There is no better pride in oneself than knowing when the right moment to retire is. I am confident that I am retiring because I want to take a step aside.”

Suarez reflected on his career, expressing a wish for his children to witness him achieve something significant with the national team. He noted that, although he did not win a major trophy with Uruguay, he cherished the experience of contributing to the team and wanted to say goodbye with his supporters at home.

Throughout his 17-year international career, Suarez has become Uruguay’s all-time leading goalscorer, with 69 goals in 142 appearances.
