The Labour Party (LP) has announced a significant shift in its approach to the 2027 presidential race, declaring that the ticket is no longer exclusively reserved for former presidential candidate Peter Obi. National Chairman Julius Abure confirmed the change, stating that the move aligns with the party’s democratic values and commitment to inclusivity.

In a press briefing, Abure clarified that the decision does not exclude Obi or any other potential candidates but rather opens the field to new contenders. He emphasized that the party’s approach adheres to the Nigerian Constitution, which allows political parties to be open to all citizens.

Abure highlighted that the LP’s constitution supports this inclusive strategy, aiming to foster healthy competition and ensure that the best candidate emerges through a transparent process. He contrasted this with other major political parties, such as the APC and PDP, which he accused of suppressing internal democracy and competition.

By embracing a more competitive and open primary process, the Labour Party aims to strengthen its democratic principles and identify the most suitable candidate for the 2027 presidential election.
