The Lekki Toll Gate has become a hot topic on X after reports emerged that protesters were arrested there and in various parts of Lagos, and subsequently taken to Panti.

Human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong claimed that the protesters were allegedly “seized by thugs at the Toll Gate” before being handed over to the police.

Effiong managed to secure the release of 12 protesters who were detained on the second day of the #EndBadGovernanceinNigeria protests.

Inibehe Effiong shared photos of the released protesters and stated: “Our pro bono legal team, operating under LAWYERS FOR RULE OF LAW AND HUMAN RIGHTS, has successfully secured the release of 12 protesters arrested by the police at the Lekki Toll Gate and other locations in Lagos.”

“Many of them were taken by thugs at the Toll Gate and then handed over to the police. We met with the Commissioner of Police earlier today at Gani Fawehinmi Freedom Park and raised concerns about the arbitrary arrest of protesters in Lagos. The CP directed us to Panti, where the detainees were held, and instructed the Deputy Commissioner of Police there to release them.”

“The protesters were thus released to me and my team. We are also working to assist detained protesters in other states and the FCT.”

Effiong listed the names of the protesters released from detention at SCIID, Panti on August 2, 2024:

1. Labe Benedict
2. Nura Umar
3. Yaro Gazama
4. Joseph Jeremiah
5. Osinachi Udoeze
6. Ayodele Ajayi
7. Godwin Moloku
8. Adelokun Wasiu
9. Precious Alfred
10. Yahaya Mohammed
11. Otika Victor
12. Ndukwe Ogbonnaya

“History will vindicate the just,” Effiong concluded.
