Prof. Adetokunbo Fabamwo, the Chief Medical Director of Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), highlighted in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that LASUTH’s obstetric unit, Ayinke House, records an average of 2,500 childbirth deliveries monthly. Ayinke House, known as Nigeria’s largest maternity hospital, underwent an upgrade from an 80-bed to a 170-bed facility equipped with advanced medical equipment.
Fabamwo noted a decline in monthly deliveries from a previous average of 3,000, attributing this to economic factors influencing family size decisions. He emphasized that LASUTH provides extensive health education during antenatal care, alongside counseling on family planning at its dedicated clinic.
Ayinke House plays a pivotal role in reducing maternal morbidity and mortality rates in Lagos State by offering comprehensive maternal services and training for medical students and resident doctors. It handles both routine and high-risk deliveries, supported by multidisciplinary care involving specialists from various fields within the hospital.
The facility, featuring modern amenities such as four operating theatres, an intensive care unit, and a team of 22 consultant obstetricians and gynaecologists, collaborates closely with other hospitals in Lagos State to enhance maternal healthcare outcomes.
Fabamwo reiterated LASUTH’s commitment to enhancing the health outcomes of mothers, infants, and children, underscoring its goal to provide accessible, high-quality healthcare services to all residents of Lagos and beyond.
