The Lagos State Government, through the State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC), commonly known as KAI, has sealed off Idera Market in Oshodi for violating environmental laws.
Major Olaniyi Cole (retd), Corps Marshal of KAI, confirmed the closure on Thursday, stating it is part of a broader initiative to enforce environmental cleanliness in registered markets across the state.
Cole explained that during routine monitoring, KAI operatives observed severe unhygienic conditions and indiscriminate refuse dumping around Idera Market, leading to its closure until further notice.
The Corps Marshal criticized the market’s sanitation practices, noting that they posed health risks to both vendors and shoppers. He emphasized that markets must adhere to hygienic standards to prevent disease outbreaks.
The market leadership failed to provide a valid waste collection contract, contributing to the accumulation of refuse. Cole warned that any market failing to comply with hygiene standards will be shut down until it meets the required conditions.
Additionally, Cole reiterated the ban on Styrofoam packs, underscoring KAI’s commitment to addressing any infractions related to its use or distribution.
