The Lagos State House of Assembly has suspended the chairman of Alimosho Local Government Area, Jelili Sulaimon, indefinitely over allegations of misconduct. The suspension took immediate effect following a unanimous vote by the lawmakers during a sitting on Monday.
As part of the resolution, the Assembly appointed the vice chairman, Akinpelu Johnson, to oversee the council’s affairs during Sulaimon’s suspension. The House further instructed the council’s management, including the manager and treasurer, to recognize Johnson’s authority and provide him with the necessary support to carry out his duties effectively.
Sulaimon’s suspension stems from several allegations, including non-compliance and defiance towards the legislative House. The Chairman of the House Committee on Local Government Administration and Chieftaincy Affairs, Sanni Okanlawon, who moved the motion for Sulaimon’s suspension, recalled a troubling incident in April 2024, when violence erupted in the Iyana-Ipaja area of Alimosho, resulting in the death of Mr. Micheal Ajayi.
Okanlawon stated that an investigation by his committee revealed that Sulaimon had allegedly masterminded the chaos. Despite the committee’s invitation to stakeholders to discuss the matter, Sulaimon reportedly displayed continued acts of misconduct, further aggravating the situation.
Additionally, Okanlawon cited Sulaimon’s failure to comply with the Assembly’s directives and issues surrounding the mismanagement of public funds as further justifications for his suspension. He called for Sulaimon’s immediate removal in accordance with relevant sections of the 1999 Constitution as amended.
