The Lagos State Police Command has arrested two women, Ujunwa Una and Chinelo Igbechionwu, for allegedly attempting to sell newborn twin girls. The arrest was confirmed by the command’s spokesperson, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, through a post on his X handle (@benHundeyin) on Friday.

The suspects were apprehended at Berger bus-stop in Lagos after a tip-off from a concerned citizen. Patrol officers from the Ojodu Division found the two women with the six-day-old baby girls while traveling from Abia State on September 9.

Investigations revealed that the women were en route to deliver the babies to a nurse in Lagos, arranged by the babies’ mother. The suspects confessed to being paid ₦150,000 to transport the infants, explaining that the mother sold the babies due to her inability to care for them.

The case has since been handed over to the Gender Unit of the command, and the newborns have been placed in a motherless babies’ home for care and medical evaluation. The police are continuing their investigation to track down other conspirators involved in the crime.
