The crisis within the Lagos State House of Assembly, particularly the ongoing power struggle over the speakership, has drawn significant attention and intervention from top members of the All Progressives Congress (APC). President Bola Tinubu’s decision to mobilize key figures such as Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, former governors Bisi Akande, Olusegun Osoba, and Akinwunmi Ambode, and other prominent party members, reflects the urgency of the situation and the desire for a swift resolution.

The disagreement over whether Mudashiru Obasa, the ousted Speaker, should return to his position has been a point of contention. Some lawmakers want him back, while others are against his return, fearing it may lead to prolonged instability. This factional divide within the Assembly has created gridlock, which has even prompted Obasa to take legal action, challenging his removal during the legislative recess.

It appears that President Tinubu is now stepping in to broker a compromise, aiming for a solution that balances the interests of all parties involved. There’s talk of Mojisola Meranda, the current Speaker, potentially stepping down to allow Setonji David from Badagry to take over the role, which would also address concerns about fair representation for Lagos West in the state leadership.

The intervention of these APC bigwigs underscores the importance of resolving the crisis for the stability of the state government and the broader political landscape. Balancing representation and addressing the desires of all factions within the Assembly will likely be a delicate process, but the President’s involvement signals a strong push for a resolution that benefits the party and the state’s governance.

Do you think Meranda stepping down for Setonji David is a reasonable solution, or do you think it could lead to further complications in the Assembly?
