The Lagos State House of Assembly has urged Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to quickly organize meetings aimed at persuading the organizers of the upcoming nationwide protest to reconsider their plans. The protest, set to occur from August 1 to August 10, is planned by youths to draw attention to the economic hardships faced by citizens.

During a plenary session on Thursday, the House passed a resolution following a Matter of Urgent Public Importance raised by Majority Leader Noheem Adams. Speaker Mudashiru Obasa emphasized the need for two key meetings: one with elected political leaders, including senators and state lawmakers, and another with traditional rulers, religious leaders, market heads, transport sector leaders, and other stakeholders.

Obasa highlighted the importance of these meetings to prevent potential unrest and ensure public safety. He recalled the 2020 EndSARS protests, noting the significant impact and damage caused, and urged that the state cannot afford a repeat of such disturbances. He stressed the necessity of calming tensions and providing a platform for dialogue to avoid further loss of life and property.

The speaker also appealed to the youth to be patient with the government, acknowledging President Tinubu’s recent efforts, such as raising the minimum wage from ₦30,000 to ₦70,000, and working on student loan schemes. Lawmakers, including Femi Saheed and Kehinde Joseph, echoed the call for patience and urged parents to dissuade their children from participating in the protest.

The Lagos Commissioner of Police, CP Adegoke Fayoade, was commended for his efforts in engaging with community leaders regarding the planned protest. The overall message from the Assembly was one of dialogue and patience, emphasizing that President Tinubu is taking steps to address the nation’s challenges.
