LABOUR PARTY CRISIS: USMAN APPOINTED CARETAKER CHAIRMAN, ABURE REJECTS DECISION

< 1 mn read

In a major shift within the Labour Party, prominent figures including former presidential candidate Peter Obi and Abia State Governor Alex Otti have appointed Senator Esther Nenadi Usman as the Caretaker Committee Chairman. This move, announced at a meeting in Umuahia on September 4, 2024, is intended to address leadership issues and prepare the party for the 2027 general elections.

ABURE’S RESPONSE: Julius Abure has dismissed the appointment, calling it illegal and unconstitutional. His spokesperson, Obiora Ifoh, contends that the decision contradicts the party’s constitution and invalidates the Umuahia meeting. Abure maintains that the results of a recent national convention remain in effect and questions the legitimacy of the new caretaker committee.

NOTABLE ATTENDEES OF THE MEETING:

  • Peter Obi
  • Datti Baba-Ahmed
  • Senator Victor Umeh
  • Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour
