The Labour Party’s Caretaker Committee has urged Julius Abure to cease presenting himself as the national chairman, stating that his tenure expired on June 9, 2024. This call was made by Salisu Mohammad, Secretary of the Board of Trustees, during a press conference organized by the National Transitional Committee (NTC) in Abuja.
Mohammad emphasized that the decision to address Abure’s status was made during a recent Umuahia stakeholder meeting led by Nenadi Usman and was deemed lawful and legitimate. He criticized Abure’s tenure, noting that it had continued without an election since he assumed office following the death of the previous chairman, Alhaji Abdulkadir Abdulsalam, in 2000. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had also previously instructed Abure to vacate the position.
The NTC, facilitated by the Nigerian Labour Congress, supports the establishment of a 29-member Caretaker Committee tasked with organizing democratic congresses at various levels of the party to elect new leadership. This intervention, led by Governor Alex Otti of Abia, aims to address what Mohammad described as illegalities within the party and ensure its democratic recovery.
