The Kwara State Police Command has dismissed three police officers allegedly involved in the tragic death of a Kwara State Polytechnic student, Qoyum Abdulyekeen Ishola, which occurred on September 4, 2024. The dismissed officers—Inspectors Abiodun Kayode, James Emmanuel, and Sergeant Oni Phillip—were found guilty after an internal trial and were removed from service effective October 4, 2024. Their dismissal precedes their pending arraignment in court.

Qoyum Abdulyekeen Ishola, a polytechnic student who had just completed his National Diploma (ND) program, was reportedly shot by the officers at a police checkpoint in the Zango area of Ilorin, allegedly after refusing to pay a bribe. He was rushed to the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital but tragically died due to excessive blood loss.

Following the incident, widespread protests erupted, led by the victim’s fellow students and family members, all demanding justice for Qoyum. The Kwara State Police Command, in a statement issued by its spokesperson Ejire Adeyemi Adetoun, reassured the public of its commitment to justice and urged patience while legal processes unfold.

The officers were found guilty of “Leaving Beat,” “Corrupt Practices,” and “Unlawful or Unnecessary Exercise of Authority” after a thorough investigation.
