Senator Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso, former Presidential Candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), has called on state governments and private investors to boost investment in alternative energy sources following a widespread blackout across Northern Nigeria caused by vandalism of the Shiroro-Kaduna transmission line.
In a statement shared on Facebook on Monday, Kwankwaso highlighted Kano’s proactive approach in establishing turbines at Challawa Gorge and Tiga Dams as a model for other states to adopt. “It is disheartening that many parts of Northern Nigeria are in total darkness today due to vandalism on the critical 330kV Shiroro-Kaduna power line,” Kwankwaso wrote, noting that the outage has affected millions of residents and disrupted factories in Kano, Kaduna, Bauchi, Gombe, and beyond.
Kwankwaso emphasized the urgent need for a stronger, more resilient power infrastructure in Nigeria, stating that the recent crisis underscores the importance of creating sustainable and localized power solutions. He urged both government and private entities to take advantage of Nigeria’s abundant natural resources to reduce dependence on an aging national grid and to ensure reliable power amid rising fuel costs and economic pressures.
