The family of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has clarified the reasons behind their son’s request for Justice Binta Nyako to step down from his case. They assert that Kanu’s demand stemmed from the judge’s refusal to comply with Supreme Court orders regarding his bail.
Kanu’s family noted that the apex court had criticized Justice Nyako for revoking his bail and questioned her failure to restore it following the Supreme Court’s directive. They accused the judge of bias against Kanu, emphasizing their loss of confidence in her ability to impartially handle the case.
Prince Emmanuel Kanu, speaking on behalf of the family, stated that the judge’s decision to recuse herself was a positive development. He expressed hope that the next judge assigned to the matter would adhere to the Supreme Court’s previous rulings.
“The reason Nnamdi Kanu requested the Presiding Judge to step down was because she refused to comply with the orders of the Supreme Court. As far as we are concerned, she was not willing or prepared to comply with any of the orders of the apex court. We also lost confidence in her because she was biased against our son,” he explained.
Furthermore, Kanu’s family argued that he should not be facing trial in Nigeria, claiming that his extraordinary rendition violated legal protocols. They maintained that he was abducted in Kenya and forcibly returned to Nigeria in contravention of international law and established procedures.
