The Kaduna State Primary Healthcare Development Agency has confirmed one death among 86 suspected cases of cholera. Director of Public Health, Hamza Ibrahim-Ikara, shared this information in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday.
Ibrahim-Ikara noted that prior to August 15, the state had not recorded any cholera cases despite outbreaks affecting 30 other states over the past five months. The first confirmed case was a 16-year-old boy from Likoro in Kudan LGA, who sadly passed away before medical assistance could arrive.
In response to the situation, the state government reactivated its rapid response team on August 16. Following this, 19 additional cases were reported from three local governments: Kudan (2 cases), Sabon Gari (9 cases), and Kubau (7 cases). Out of the total suspected cases, 24 have been treated and discharged.
Ibrahim-Ikara also mentioned that 30 samples tested positive for cholera, with patients treated and discharged from various health facilities. He emphasized the importance of public awareness through sensitization programs about cholera transmission, symptoms, and prevention methods.
He urged residents to seek medical attention for any suspected cases, assuring the public of the state’s preparedness to manage the outbreak effectively and prevent further spread.
