Residents of Kaduna have expressed frustration over a sharp increase in transport fares over the past two days. The surge in fares follows recent hunger protests and coincides with a significant rise in fuel prices, which now stand at ₦950 per litre.
Abdulmumin Shuaibu, a civil servant, reported that his usual fare from Sabon Tasha to the city center has jumped from ₦300 to ₦400. He noted that the situation worsens during evening rush hours, with many people struggling to find available transportation due to a shortage of buses.
Aisha Sulaiman experienced a similar increase, paying ₦800 for her commute to work, up from ₦600. Yohannah Isiah faced additional challenges as fuel stations in his area were closed, forcing him to buy fuel from the black market at ₦1,250 per litre. Commercial tricycle rider Shafi’u Ibrahim also saw his fuel costs rise from ₦800 to ₦950 per litre compared to the previous week.
