A Chief Magistrates’ Court in Kaduna sentenced Rabiu Yusuf to 16 weeks in prison on Tuesday for stealing two iPhones valued at N678,000. Magistrate Ibrahim Emmanuel ruled that Yusuf failed to provide a reasonable explanation for his crime.
The court warned Yusuf to avoid any future criminal acts or face harsher penalties if he reoffends.
Yusuf, who resides on Ali Akilu Road in Kaduna, was convicted of criminal conspiracy and theft after pleading guilty. According to Prosecutor Insp Chidi Leo, Yusuf committed the theft on September 13 at Kurmin Marshi, Kaduna, along with two accomplices who remain at large.
The stolen iPhones belonged to Zainab Salisu and were taken from her shop under the guise of purchasing clothing materials. CCTV footage revealed Yusuf as the thief, leading to his arrest when the stolen phones were found at his residence.
The prosecution noted that the offense violated the Penal Code of Kaduna State, 2017.
