On Monday, Israel’s military forces crossed into southern Lebanon to carry out “limited, localized, and targeted ground raids” against Hezbollah, an Iran-backed militant group. The aim of the operation is to push Hezbollah forces further from the Israeli border and to dismantle their infrastructure, including weapons stockpiles. The operation is expected to last for a few days, as reported by U.S. officials.
OPERATION TARGETS HEZBOLLAH INFRASTRUCTURE NEAR BORDER
Israeli officials confirmed the raids, stating they are based on precise intelligence targeting Hezbollah positions in villages near the border that pose an immediate threat to Israeli communities in the north. Hezbollah, a Lebanese militia and political group supported by Iran, began firing on Israel on October 8 in support of Hamas, which had launched an attack on Israel a day earlier.
ONGOING CONFLICT ESCALATES TENSIONS
Since the exchange of fire between Hezbollah and Israel, both sides have seen significant displacements. The conflict marks a new phase in Israel’s efforts to secure its northern borders, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu signaling a broader strategy to ensure the safe return of displaced northern residents.
