Inter Milan and AC Milan have rejected the proposed project to modernize and restructure the iconic San Siro stadium, as announced by Milan’s city mayor Giuseppe Sala.
According to Sala, the clubs declined the proposal from the construction group WeBuild after conducting thorough technical and economic analyses. They concluded that the project was not feasible at a sustainable cost and decided against pursuing it.
However, the clubs remain open to relaunching their initial plans for a new stadium near San Siro. Sala noted that while they are not starting from scratch, there is significant resistance from local residents. The clubs are expected to present a new project within a relatively short timeframe, though building stadiums in Italy is notoriously complex.
To boost their commercial revenues, both clubs, who have collectively won 10 European titles, have expressed a desire to move away from San Siro. Officially known as Giuseppe Meazza Stadium, the 80,000-capacity venue, built in 1926, no longer meets their needs.
AC Milan has acquired land in San Donato Milanese, a suburb southeast of Milan, as part of their plan to relocate. Inter Milan is considering sites in Rozzano and Assago, just south of Milan, and has also explored former industrial sites in Sesto San Giovanni.
San Siro is slated to host the opening ceremony of the 2026 Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics and is also expected to be the venue for the 2027 Champions League final. The ongoing uncertainty about the stadium’s future could potentially impact these events.
