In preparation for the upcoming governorship election in Ondo State on November 16, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the establishment of dedicated telephone lines for media practitioners. These lines are intended to facilitate quick verification of information before publication or broadcasting, reinforcing efforts to ensure a free, fair, and credible election.
During a workshop held in Akure for media executives, Alhaji Amosa Lamidi, Head of Department for Electoral Operations at INEC, represented by Mr. Tope Onojobi, revealed that a situation room would also be set up to handle calls regarding situation reports and respond to inquiries from journalists during the election. The hotlines will be made available to the media prior to election day.
Lamidi urged media practitioners to ensure their reports are accurate and balanced to prevent violence in the state before, during, and after the election.
Mr. Sam Olumekun, National Commissioner and Chairman of INEC’s Information and Voter Education Committee, represented by Ondo State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) Mrs. Oluwatoyin Babalola, encouraged journalists to hold politicians, stakeholders, and INEC accountable. He promised that INEC would provide timely and accurate information to the media throughout the electoral process.
Olumekun emphasized the significance of addressing voter apathy, misinformation, and logistical challenges, urging the media to collaborate in informing eligible voters about collecting their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).
He also stressed the necessity for professionalism, fairness, and ethical journalism in covering the election, stating, “You have the power to shape narratives, set agendas, and influence public perception. I urge you to wield this power responsibly, ensuring that your reporting remains balanced, objective, and free from sensationalism.”
Olumekun assured media practitioners of INEC’s ongoing support, including access to electoral materials and opportunities for engagement, and welcomed constructive feedback to improve its processes.
