The Imo State Police Command reported on Wednesday that operatives killed one suspected armed robber and injured others during a confrontation in Owerri North Local Government Area.
Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) Henry Okoye made the announcement to newsmen in Owerri, detailing that the incident occurred at Dominion Street near Don Kay during a gun battle between the police and the armed robbers. The police acted swiftly following a distress call from residents in the area.
Okoye stated, “Operatives of the Imo State Police Command have dismantled a notorious armed robbery syndicate terrorizing the residents of Owerri North LGA of Imo State. This breakthrough is a result of enhanced security measures initiated by Commissioner of Police, CP Aboki Danjuma, targeting violent crimes, especially at night.”
The confrontation took place on October 15, 2024, around 3:20 AM, when a patrol team from the Owerri North Divisional Headquarters responded to a call regarding an armed robbery. Upon their arrival, the armed robbers opened fire, prompting the officers to strategically return fire.
“During the confrontation, one suspect was neutralized, while another identified as Moses Nanzi, a 31-year-old from Faringada in Plateau State, sustained a gunshot injury and was arrested. The remaining gang members fled into the bushes. A double-barrel gun and seven rounds of live cartridges were recovered from the arrested suspect,” Okoye added.
The police are currently working to apprehend the fleeing suspects, and the arrested individual will face prosecution following a thorough investigation. The Imo State Police Command remains dedicated to ensuring the safety of residents and encourages the public to report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station or via the emergency contact number 0803 477 3600.
