Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun has announced the deployment of 35,000 officers from the Nigeria Police Force to Edo State for the upcoming September 21 governorship election. In addition, 8,000 personnel from other security agencies will also be on hand to support the operation.
At a stakeholders meeting organized by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Benin, Egbetokun assured Edo residents of their safety during the election, urging them to vote with confidence that their security is guaranteed. He emphasized that the task of ensuring a secure electoral process falls solely on the police, with support from other security agencies.
The IGP also revealed the indefinite suspension of the Edo State Security Network (ESSN), stating that no private or state-owned security apparatus would be permitted to operate during or after the election. He warned against political thuggery and violence, affirming that the police would take action against any offenders.
The police will enforce a no-movement restriction from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on election day, and all local security outfits are instructed to avoid interfering in election matters. Egbetokun highlighted that the police force is trained to perform its duties impartially and professionally, ensuring a fair and secure electoral environment.
