The Igbo General Assembly (IGA) in Europe has appealed to President Bola Tinubu to release the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, arguing that this would bring an end to the ongoing agitations and insecurity in the South East.

During the 14th Igbo General Assembly held in Sevilla, Spain, IGA President General, Chief Kingsley Ozo Ndibe, criticized former President Muhammadu Buhari for disregarding multiple court orders granting bail to Kanu, stating that it violated his fundamental human rights. Ndibe expressed confidence that Kanu’s release would resolve the unrest in the region, urging President Tinubu to apply a political solution similar to the cases of Sunday Igboho and other northern agitators.

Ndibe’s appeal highlighted that Kanu’s continued detention has fueled unrest in the South East, where non-state actors have escalated insecurity. He called on Tinubu to unconditionally release Kanu, ensuring peace and stability in the region.

In addition, Nigeria’s Ambassador to Spain, Naomey Chika Nwachukwu, addressed Nigerians at the event, urging patience with President Tinubu’s policies, assuring that they would eventually yield positive outcomes. Nwachukwu also emphasized the importance of unity among Nigerians, regardless of ethnic or religious backgrounds, and praised the cultural representation of Nigeria in Spain.
