Nigerian international star Omah Lay has expressed his appreciation for the “Afro-depression” label that fans have given to his music.
Omah Lay is renowned for his music that delves into emotions such as pain, loneliness, and the struggles associated with fame. In a recent Billboard interview, he shared his delight at the “Afro-depression” tag, noting that it reflects how deeply his audience connects with his music without him needing to explain it.
“I definitely love it. I love that I started a new movement and my music started something new that I didn’t have to come out and tell people that my music is ‘Afro-depression’. My fans made it up, and I didn’t have to explain… It’s great to witness that I can just make music and the world can decide what it’s about, and it becomes a movement,” Omah Lay stated.
His debut album, Boy Alone, which features the hit record “Soso,” is a testament to his melancholic style, earning him the “Afro-depression” tag. Omah Lay believes his music has inspired many new Afrobeats artists who are incorporating elements of his style into their own work.
The award-winning artist recently released “Moving,” the first single from his upcoming sophomore album, which he mentioned he had to re-record after an artist he shared his vision with allegedly stole his sound.
