George and Chioma Buchi were killed in an explosion at their home on Water Works Road, Abakiliki, Ebonyi State. Chioma, the younger sister of Afrobeat singer Patoranking, and her husband had recently moved into their newly built residence.
The exact cause of the explosion remains unclear, with conflicting reports suggesting it could have been caused by a solar light battery inverter, a gas cylinder, or a planted device. According to neighbor Nwokporo Victor Uchechukwu, the explosion severely damaged the building, destroying electronics and causing structural damage.
DSP Joshua Ukandu, the state Police Public Relations Officer, confirmed the incident, stating that the couple was initially hospitalized but Chioma died first, followed by her husband on September 11, 2024. The cause of the explosion has yet to be determined, with investigations ongoing.
The couple leaves behind a 3-year-old son, who was reportedly with his grandmother at the time of the incident.
