The human rights organization Onurube has appealed to Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun for immediate intervention to secure the release of Mrs. Perpetua Oparaocha from police detention in Imo State.
Oparaocha was arrested on September 13, 2024, at her shop in Umunachi village by individuals claiming to be police officers from the SCID. According to Marjorie Ezihe, the convener of Onurube, the arrest is connected to a dispute over property belonging to Oparaocha’s late husband.
The complainants allegedly offered Oparaocha N10 million to withdraw her support for her in-laws’ legal action and to sign a memorandum of understanding (MOU) relinquishing her claim to the land. Oparaocha declined, citing the need for legal counsel and stating that her student account could not manage such a large sum.
Onurube asserts that Oparaocha’s family is already engaged in legal proceedings against the complainants, who are allegedly trying to intimidate her and claim her late husband’s property in Anambra State.
The group has urged the IGP to:
- Release Oparaocha: Ensure her release from police detention so she can receive medical attention, given her hunger strike and existing health issues.
- Protect Oparaocha’s Family: Ensure the safety and security of Oparaocha, her daughter, and both the Oparaocha and Nwagbo families.
