The House of Representatives Minority Caucus has expressed profound sorrow over the recent catastrophic floods that have devastated several major cities in Nigeria, resulting in tragic loss of life and widespread property damage.
The floods, caused by heavy rains, have severely impacted Maiduguri, parts of Bayelsa, Bauchi, and other regions from Sunday night to Tuesday morning. The deluge has submerged entire communities, causing extensive damage to homes, infrastructure, and livelihoods.
In a statement issued by the Minority Caucus and signed by Rep. Kingsley Chinda, the lawmakers conveyed their sympathy and solidarity with those affected. The statement read:
“Our hearts are heavy with grief over the flood disaster that has engulfed various parts of the country, leading to a staggering loss of property during such a vulnerable time. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families who have lost loved ones and their means of livelihood due to this catastrophe.”
The caucus also called for immediate and enhanced emergency relief efforts, praising the humanitarian organizations working on the ground for their dedicated assistance to the affected communities. They urged a coordinated response, stating, “We call on all levels of government to intensify their emergency efforts and commend the humanitarian organizations for their relentless work to aid the affected areas.”
Additionally, the Minority Caucus highlighted the importance of proactive measures to prevent future disasters. They urged both the Federal Government and state governments to adopt preventive strategies rather than relying on reactive responses. “We urge the Federal Government and state authorities to implement proactive measures to mitigate such disasters in the future, rather than resorting to the same old reactive approach after the damage has occurred,” the statement concluded.
