The House of Representatives Committee on Safety Standards and Regulations has voiced concerns about safety issues and the use of substandard equipment in the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI).
Committee Chairman, Dr. Suleiman Abubakar Gumi, reiterated the House’s dedication to enforcing safety laws within the sector.
To tackle these safety challenges, the Committee, in collaboration with the Association for Public Policy Analysis, will organize a conference aimed at finding solutions. The power sector has been highlighted as a crucial area requiring strict adherence to safety standards and regulatory policies.
Dr. Gumi emphasized that while the Federal Government has enacted laws and established institutions to oversee and enforce safety regulations in the electricity sector, challenges such as vandalism, theft, unlicensed electrical installations, and the use of substandard materials persist. The conference is intended to enhance the Committee’s oversight and investigative roles, as outlined in Section 88 of the 1999 Constitution.
The goal of the conference is to elevate safety standards and regulations in the electricity sector, ensuring effective legislative action and safeguarding Nigerian citizens.
