The Different Genotypes

  • A Allele: Represents normal hemoglobin (HbA). Individuals with this allele usually have healthy red blood cells.
  • C Allele: Represents hemoglobin C (HbC), a variant form that is less efficient in carrying oxygen. This can lead to red blood cells being more fragile or having a shorter lifespan.

Genotype AC

  • Individuals with the AC genotype possess one normal hemoglobin allele (A) and one hemoglobin C allele (C). Generally, people with this genotype experience no major health problems and lead normal lives. However, in cases of severe dehydration or low oxygen levels, they might experience mild symptoms such as slight anemia.

Importance of Genotype

  • It’s essential to distinguish genotype AC from sickle cell traits (AS) or sickle cell disease (SS). Those with genotype AC do not have sickle cell disease, but if they have children with someone carrying the S allele (e.g., AS or SS), there’s a chance the child could inherit a combination of alleles that might result in sickle cell trait or disease.
