Nollywood actress Halima Abubakar has initiated legal action against Emeka Rollas, the National President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), seeking N30 billion in damages following her recent suspension from the guild.
The lawsuit comes after the AGN announced her indefinite suspension on October 17, 2024, through Rollas’ social media account. The statement accused Abubakar of spreading defamatory information about fellow AGN members, specifically alleging involvement in rumors of extramarital affairs within the entertainment industry.
Expressing her shock at the accusations, Abubakar stated that she had not been contacted by the AGN prior to the announcement and had no opportunity to address the claims before they went public.
In a letter dated October 20, 2024, from her legal team, P.D. Pius & Associates, Abubakar’s representatives condemned Rollas’ actions as a deliberate attempt to damage her reputation. They emphasized that the false narrative was intended to undermine her standing and provoke social backlash.
The letter highlighted Abubakar’s ongoing health struggles and criticized the timing of the allegations, asserting that they have caused her significant emotional distress and reputational harm.
Her legal team has demanded the removal of the defamatory statement and a public apology on Rollas’ Instagram page, alongside the N30 billion in damages for the harm inflicted on her reputation.
The letter concluded with a warning that if these demands are not met within seven days, they would pursue further legal action.
