Pep Guardiola has voiced his frustration with the Premier League after they refused Manchester City’s request to delay the start of their 2025-26 season due to their involvement in the FIFA Club World Cup. City had hoped to postpone their first few matches of the next campaign to allow extra recovery time, but their plea has been rejected.

Guardiola highlighted the risk of player burnout, especially with the added strain of the Club World Cup in the United States. City’s season could extend until July 13 if they reach the final of the expanded 32-team tournament, leaving only a brief window before the next Premier League season, expected to start in early August.

The Spanish manager is particularly concerned about the impact on his squad, with key midfielder Rodri already out for the rest of this season due to a knee injury. Guardiola fears the increased workload could lead to further injuries.

City’s request included postponing the first two Premier League games by a few weeks, but the Premier League has declined, affecting not only City but other teams like Chelsea that could be involved in the Club World Cup.

Tensions between City and the Premier League remain high as the club continues to fight 115 charges of alleged financial misconduct, including accusations of failing to cooperate with an investigation. Guardiola sarcastically thanked the Premier League, saying, “Thank you so much! They don’t postpone these games,” as he expressed his disappointment over the situation.
