“Mrs. Maimunatu Ibrahima, a parliament member from Togo, has shattered the glass ceiling by becoming the first female Speaker of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Parliament. This groundbreaking achievement marks a significant step forward for gender equality and representation in the region’s political leadership.

Sworn in during the second extraordinary session of the parliament in Kano, Nigeria, Mrs. Ibrahima embraced her new role with a pledge to foster integration within the sub-region. Her appointment comes as part of the parliament’s rotational system, with Togo assuming the speakership for this legislative session.

In her response after taking the oath, Mrs. Ibrahima articulated her commitment to enhancing the parliament’s image, aiming to make it more responsible and respected across the region. Expressing gratitude for the trust bestowed upon her by her colleagues, she vowed to leverage her extensive experience to advance the interests of the West African sub-region.

Acknowledging the support of Togo’s and Nigeria’s presidents, as well as the heads of state authorities, Mrs. Ibrahima emphasized the importance of cooperation and collaboration among ECOWAS member states. Her vision is centered on promoting harmony and progress in the region, with a strong focus on integration and development.

The historic appointment of Mrs. Ibrahima has received commendations from various quarters, including female members of the parliament who lauded the decision to elect a woman to lead the institution. Having previously served as the third Deputy Speaker in the Fifth Legislature of the ECOWAS Parliament, Mrs. Ibrahima brings a wealth of experience to her new role.

She succeeds Sen. Barau Jibrin of Nigeria, who served as the acting Speaker and was elected as the First Deputy Speaker during the inauguration of the Sixth Legislature of the ECOWAS Parliament. Mrs. Ibrahima’s ascendancy to the position of Speaker signifies a significant milestone in the journey towards gender equality and inclusive representation in West Africa’s political landscape.”
