Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State has raised alarms over the ongoing arrest and harassment of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leaders in the state as the gubernatorial election approaches on September 21. Obaseki expressed concern that these actions, allegedly in collaboration with opposition forces, could lead to a state-wide crisis with destabilizing effects across the nation.
Addressing protesters at the Government House in Benin City, Obaseki highlighted the arrest of a local government chairman and warned of a plan to target other PDP stalwarts, including himself. He described this trend as a significant threat to democracy.
The governor has sought urgent intervention from the Inspector General of Police (IGP), expressing frustration over the police’s actions, which he believes undermine his authority as the state’s Chief Security Officer. Obaseki urged party members and the public to remain calm while he awaits the outcome of his meeting with the IGP, emphasizing the importance of maintaining peace to prevent any national repercussions.
Obaseki vowed to take decisive action following his discussions with the IGP, stressing that the democratic process in Edo must be respected.
