The three tiers of government in Nigeria have been urged to create an enabling environment for farmers to address the country’s ongoing food shortage crisis. Mrs. Blessing Alawode, the immediate past Chairman of the Poultry Association of Nigeria, Ogun State (PANOG), emphasized this during her keynote address at the 2024 World Egg Day celebration, held at the Ogun State Agricultural Development Programme (OGADEP) in Abeokuta.

Alawode pointed out that issues such as insecurity, kidnappings, poor infrastructure, and a rising cost of feeds are key challenges hindering food production. These issues have led many farmers to shut down operations, exacerbating unemployment. She called on the government to improve security for farmers and harmonize taxes and levies, noting that multiple taxation and the harsh economic climate are stifling the agricultural sector.

In addition, she urged the state government to provide subsidized maize and ensure farmers benefit from federal government interventions. Alawode also encouraged poultry farmers to strengthen collaborations to continue thriving and feeding the nation.

During the event, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu, the State Commissioner for Education, Science, and Technology, commended poultry farmers for their role in combating hunger and malnutrition through egg production. He emphasized the health benefits of eggs, noting that regular consumption improves brain health, boosts immunity, and supports muscle and eye health, particularly for children’s development.

Dr. Ajibola Odukoya, acting PANOG Chairman, also urged Nigerians to increase egg consumption, debunking the myth that eggs are unhealthy for adults. He emphasized the nutritional value of eggs, which can enhance health and reduce hospital visits. This year’s World Egg Day celebration carried the theme “United by Eggs.”
