Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa has announced plans to construct over 1,000 affordable housing units across the eight local governments of the state. This commitment was made during a state broadcast commemorating Nigeria’s 64th Independence and the 28th anniversary of Bayelsa’s creation.
In his address, Diri also pledged to provide pipe-borne water in Yenagoa, the state capital, and its surrounding areas during his second term. He emphasized his administration’s dedication to building a new Bayelsa, where all citizens have access to quality education, affordable healthcare, and economic opportunities aimed at enhancing the well-being of the populace.
Expressing gratitude to the people of Bayelsa for re-electing him and his deputy, Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, Diri highlighted the importance of pursuing development and addressing environmental challenges, including soot pollution, flooding, and oil spills that have historically impacted the state.
Diri stated, “We are filled with renewed optimism and a steadfast commitment to building a new Bayelsa. A Bayelsa where every citizen has access to quality education, affordable and reliable healthcare, and abundant economic opportunities.”
Reflecting on the achievements of his administration in the past four years, he noted significant progress in areas such as peace and security, sports, education, healthcare, road infrastructure, and skills acquisition. He attributed these successes to unity, cooperation, and a shared vision for development.
Among the key projects highlighted are the construction of an iconic state secretariat, ongoing developments in Glory Drive Phase 3, new quarters for legislators and commissioners, and the construction of modern stadium facilities. Diri also mentioned the construction of several major roads, including Onuebum-Otuoke and Akaba-Okodi, alongside the provision of an independent power plant and enhanced water supply systems.
Concluding his speech, Diri recognized the contributions of past administrations and the resilience of Bayelsa’s people, urging them to stand united despite their differences. He extended his congratulations to President Bola Tinubu and the citizens of Bayelsa, wishing them a joyous anniversary celebration.
