The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at Gombe State University has initiated an indefinite strike, marking the first such action in 21 years. The decision stems from unresolved welfare issues and the government’s failure to address long-standing demands.

ASUU branch chairman Dr. Suleiman Salihu Jauro announced the strike, citing unsatisfactory teaching and learning conditions. He highlighted the non-implementation of the 2021 Memorandum of Action (MoA), which included a promised ₦50 million annual funding from the Gombe State government that has not been fulfilled for nearly four years.

Additionally, the strike is driven by unresolved Earned Academic Allowances (EAA) that have accumulated over five years, unpaid promotion arrears, and the non-implementation of the ₦30,000 minimum wage law signed by Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya in 2020. Despite the state government’s recent approval of ₦265 million for promotion arrears, no payments have been made.

Dr. Jauro urged students and parents to be patient and called on the government to honor its commitments, stressing the urgency of addressing the welfare concerns of the academic staff.
