Oluwatuyi Olasoji, Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) in Akure South Local Government, Ondo State, tragically passed away after collapsing at a filling station.
Olasoji’s death occurred as he waited in a long queue to purchase fuel amidst Nigeria’s ongoing fuel scarcity crisis. Reports from Sunshine Truth indicate that Olasoji collapsed at a fuel station in Akure last week. He was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre in Owo for surgery but unfortunately passed away on September 9, 2024, according to Sahara Reporters.
The fuel scarcity has worsened recently, leading to extensive queues at petrol stations nationwide, causing severe traffic disruptions and increased transport fares. Motorists are frustrated, and many commuters are left stranded due to doubled transport costs.
The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) had previously assured that the fuel scarcity would resolve soon. The NNPCL attributed the scarcity to market deregulation, meaning that petrol prices are now influenced by market forces rather than government control, with the exchange rate also playing a significant role. The NNPCL is awaiting the September 15 timeline for petrol lifting from the Dangote Refinery, which is hoped to alleviate the fuel shortages.
