At the 50th Anniversary celebration of Eko Club in Surulere, former Minister of Works and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, SAN, called on social clubs across Nigeria to play a significant role in the country’s social re-engineering and sustainable national growth.
Delivering a lecture titled “The Role of Social Clubs in Engineering,” Fashola emphasized the importance of social clubs in shaping national policies and societal progress. He recalled how, during his tenure as Governor of Lagos State, he leveraged social clubs as platforms to introduce and test new policies, citing the Lagos State Road Traffic Law of 2012 as a prime example.
Fashola highlighted the historical significance of Eko Club, established in 1974 by a group of young men with shared interests. He urged social clubs to draw inspiration from their foundational goals and actively contribute to addressing Nigeria’s socio-economic challenges.
Reflecting on the role of social clubs, Fashola stressed the need for these organizations to remain true to their original missions while adapting to contemporary issues to support national development effectively.
