Mr. Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, announced that foreigners earning income in Nigeria will soon be required to pay taxes under a proposed amendment to the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) Bill, 2024. Speaking in Abuja, Onanuga explained that the amendment is part of the Economic Stabilisation Bills approved by the Federal Executive Council (FEC), set to be forwarded to the National Assembly.
The amendment will require all residents of Nigeria, including foreigners, to be registered and issued tax identities, ensuring they are taxed under the Nigerian system. Previously, the law excluded foreigners from registration and taxation.
Additionally, another bill in the Economic Stabilisation package proposes changes to the operating laws of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) and the Nigerian Port Authority (NPA). These agencies will now collect their fees, charges, levies, and fines in Naira rather than dollars, aligning with the government’s focus on strengthening the national currency.
