Residents of Bode Saadu in the Moro Local Government Area of Kwara State are dealing with the aftermath of severe flooding caused by intermittent downpours on Wednesday evening. The floods submerged many houses, forcing numerous residents to leave their homes and seek shelter elsewhere. The Bode Saadu community, located on the Ilorin-Jebba highway, was particularly affected due to its proximity to the riverbank.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that while flooding is common in nearby Jebba, this time Bode Saadu bore the brunt of the disaster. Residents attributed the flooding to the high volume of water struggling to pass through a makeshift bridge along the expressway.
Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq visited the affected areas on Thursday to assess the situation and sympathize with the victims. He directed the State Emergency Management Agency to provide relief materials and warned residents about the dangers of building on floodplains, which worsened the impact.
Accompanied by officials, the governor inspected the flood-hit areas and expressed his commitment to addressing the root causes of the flooding. The ongoing dualisation of the Ilorin-Mokwa road, which includes a temporary bypass, was identified as a contributing factor to the incident.
Residents expressed their appreciation for the governor’s visit, noting that it demonstrated his dedication to their welfare.
