A severe flood in Maiduguri, Borno State, has led to the escape of several animals from the Sanda Kyarimi Zoo, creating panic among residents in the area. The flood, caused by the collapse of the Alau Dam, has submerged large parts of the city, forcing zoo animals like lions, snakes, an ostrich, and a crocodile to break free from their enclosures.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that while one of the escaped crocodiles was found dead after being attacked, the ostrich is still wandering. The Director of Forest and Wildlife, Ayuba Peter, confirmed the incident, stating that the zoo’s management was caught off guard by the flooding. He also mentioned that roads around the area have been blocked to prevent human movement, while wildlife staff are on patrol to recapture any escaped animals, especially the dangerous carnivores.
A source within the zoo revealed that about 80% of the animals, particularly those in locked facilities, have died due to the flood. Others, like snakes and crocodiles, have been washed away. The ongoing flooding has continued to pose a significant threat to Maiduguri and its surroundings.
